MeterDog attaches alongside the water meter on the property and starts to m easure all water activity that comes through the water meter. This information is then transmitted through cellular connection to the app and online dashboard.

Your WaterNumber is calculated from the speed and number of times your water meter moves. If you have any water flow at all the WaterNumber will show up greater than zero.
Not necessarily. The water number is there for you to see your daily water use patterns. It is not intended to count your gallons because it responds to how often your water meter moves. This means we can catch very small leaks fast.
Small leaks don’t always turn the water meter constantly. Sometimes they turn the water meter then stop for a minute or two. Toilet leaks are the same way. The water leaks and it fills a bit to make up the leak loss. The toilet leak and the small drip only move the meter every so often, but it does it all day long. The WaterNumber is sensitive to this kind of water loss so keeping track of increasing WaterNumbers can make you more aware of these small leaks that grow into much bigger leaks and cost dollars every month on the water bill.
If your water number is larger than expected it could mean that your family is over for a visit and there are twice as many people using water or it could mean that your toilet started leaking. You are aware of more water use when the family is over for a visit… You’re not so aware when your toilet starts leaking. So WaterNumber is just another way MeterDog helps you to keep track of your water use AND can detect small leaks that just drip.
If I am away for 2 weeks and the water is off, should my WaterNumber drop to 0? If all water use is zero including ice makers, you can expect little water meter movement. The WaterNumber is a daily rollup of data so it will take a day or two to show the decrease and it may not always be zero.
This depends on a lot of factors. What is important to know is what your patterns are and if they are constant or vary greatly. One meter may report a large water number and another small. One may report more regularly because its only for irrigation. Your WaterNumber is something you will discover as you gather more data. In a matter of weeks, you will see patterns that match your daily use. If you immediately get a water leak alert maybe you do have a leak. Our observations are that typical households of 2 without much irrigation or pool have a water number of under 10. Larger families or higher use with pools and irrigation may be typically found between 10 and 20. If you are higher than 40 this may mean you are using water more heavily or you may have a small leak.
